Non-negotiable Revelation (John Stott)

Selamat pagi sahabatku  The gospel is a non-negotiable revelation from God. We may certainly discuss its meaning and its interpretation, so long as our purpose is to grasp it more firmly ourselves and commend it more acceptably to others. But we have no liberty to sit in judgment on it, or to tamper with its substance.   For it is God’s gospel not ours, and its truth is to be received not criticized, declared not discussed.   Enjoy your day with our Lord (y) GBU Send to Facebook … Read entire article »

A Trinitarian Gospel - (John Stott)

Selamat pagi sahabatku  At the beginning of Paul’s letter to the Romans, where he uses the expression ‘the gospel of God’, it is plain that God is the subject not the object of the genitive. It is God who conceived, engineered and published the gospel, whereas the substance of the good news is Christ: ‘Paul … called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God … concerning his Son … Jesus Christ our Lord’ (Rom. 1:1-4).   The gospel of God concerns the Son of God; it is an announcement about Christ. The Holy Spirit bears witness ‘concerning’ Christ (Jn. 15:26), and the apostolic message could be summarized in the words, ‘him we proclaim’ (Col. 1:28). The central truth of the good news, then, is Christ himself.   Have a … Read entire article »

The Only Exit (John Stott)

Selamat pagi sahabatku  Death is the only exit to the prison house of sin. ‘He who has died has been justified from his sin’ (Rom. 6:7, literally). This death Christ died for us. He died our death. If, then, we are united to Christ, it is as true to say, ‘I died in Christ’ as it is to say, ‘He died for me.’ Since Christ died my death and I am in him, God sees me as if I had died myself. Having died and risen with Christ, the law’s demands are met, and I am set free.   GBU Send to Facebook … Read entire article »

God’s Holiness and Human Sin (John Stott)

Selamat pagi sahabatku  All divine judgment seems and sounds unjust until we see God as He is and ourselves as we are, according to Scripture.   As for God, Scripture uses the pictures of light and fire to set forth his perfect holiness. He dwells in unapproachable light, dazzling, even blinding in its splendour, and is a consuming fire. Human beings who have only glimpsed His glory have been unable to bear the sight, and have turned away or run away or swooned.   As for ourselves, I often want to say to my contemporaries what Anselm said to his, ‘You have not yet considered the seriousness of sin.’ GBU Send to Facebook … Read entire article »

Empty Religion (John Stott)

Selamat pagi sahabatku  We need to listen again to the biblical criticism of religion. No book, not even by Marx and his followers, is more scathing of empty religion than the Bible. The prophets of the eighth and seventh centuries BC were outspoken in their denunciation of the formalism and hypocrisy of Israelite worship.   Jesus then applied their critique to the Pharisees of His day: ‘These people … honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me’ (Is. 29:13; Mk. 7:6). And this indictment of religion by the Old Testament prophets and by Jesus is uncomfortably applicable to us and our churches today. Too much of our worship is ritual without reality, form without power, fun without fear, religion without God.   Have a great day (y) GBU Send to Facebook … Read entire article »

Spiritual Death (John Stott)

Selamat pagi sahabatku  Biblical statements about the ‘deadness’ of non-Christian people raise problems for many because this does not seem to square with the facts of everyday experience.   Lots of people who make no Christian profession whatever, who even openly repudiate Jesus Christ, appear to be very much alive.   One has the vigorous body of an athlete, another the lively mind of a scholar, a third the vivacious personality of a film star. Are we to say that such people, if Christ has not saved them, are dead? Yes, indeed, we must and do say this very thing.   For in the sphere which matters supremely (which is neither the body, nor the mind, nor the personality, but the soul) they have no life. And you can tell it. They are … Read entire article »

Self-Deification (John Stott)

Selamat pagi sahabatku  Pride is more than the first of the seven deadly sins; it is itself the essence of all sin. For it is the stubborn refusal to let God be God, with the corresponding ambition to take His place. It is the attempt to dethrone God and enthrone ourselves. Sin is self-deification.   Enjoy your Friday (y) GBU Send to Facebook … Read entire article »

True Freedom (John Stott)

Selamat pagi sahabatku  True freedom is not freedom from all responsibility to God and man in order to live for myself, but the exact opposite.   True freedom is freedom from myself and from the cramping tyranny of my own self-centredness, in order to live in love for God and others.   Only in such self-giving love is an authentically free and human existence to be found.   Happy Thursday (y) GBU Send to Facebook … Read entire article »

Confessing and Forsaking (John Stott)

It is important, when we bring our sins into the open before God, not to stop there, but to go on to adopt a right attitude towards both God and the sin itself.   First, we confess the sin, humbling ourselves with a contrite heart before God.   Secondly, we forsake it, rejecting and repudiating it. This is a vital part of what is meant by ‘mortification’ in the New Testament. It is taking up towards sin an attitude of resolute antagonism. The uncovering of sin is in itself of little value; it must lead us to an attitude both of humility towards God and of hostility towards sin. ‘Ye that love the Lord hate evil’, or ‘the Lord loves those who hate evil’ (Ps. 97: 1 0, AV and RSV); and … Read entire article »
